It is that time of year when one can expect to find electric vehicles at the foot of First Street during the Benicia Certified Farmers Market. For those who have been considering buying an electric vehicle, this is the week to learn more.

Benicia is currently in the midst of National Drive Electric Week, a national event aimed at encouraging drivers to buy electric vehicles. At the Sept. 4 City Council meeting, Vice Mayor Steve Young read a proclamation recognizing National Drive Electric Week, which is being held through Sept. 16. Throughout the world, electric vehicle owners will host their own events, including electric car parades, hold “tailpipe-free” tailgate parties and launches of EV charging stations. The national organizers include Plug In America, The Sierra Club and the Electric Auto Association.

Locally, the event is hosted by the Benicia Community Sustainability Commission. As in previous years, the CSC will have a booth set up at the farmers market featuring a Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf on display.

“The Leaf is pure electric, and the Volt is electric in that it will switch over to a gas-powered generator,” Commissioner Kathy Kerridge said.

Vehicle owners will be able to show off their vehicles and answer questions. Kerridge, who owns a Volt, said the benefits of electric vehicles are numerous. According to her, the cars are cheaper, emit less air pollution, have quick acceleration and are more convenient than fossil fuel-powered vehicles.

“Even though my car does take gas, I rarely go to a gas station,” she said.

Kerridge said she hopes people who stop by the exhibit will become interested enough to go to a dealership and take a test drive. Kerridge said she has noticed a lot of drivers become inspired after taking test drives, which is what she ultimately hopes for.

“I think a lot of people still have the idea that an electric vehicle is like a little golf cart,” she said with a laugh. “There’s a huge number of options available now.”

The electric vehicle exhibit will be featured from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13 at the farmers market.
