One sniff of cookies baking in the oven, of a fully opened rose bud, or even a cleaning product can spark memories, hopefully good, sometimes not. This concept, known as the “Proust Phenomenon”, suggests that although we each have different memories and experiences, everyone has the ability to experience a distinct response when inhaling aromas. Scientists and psychologists have studied emotions for many years, yet this area of the human framework remains somewhat mysterious. It is clear, however, that scents directly affect our emotions and our emotions affect our creativity.
When we inhale a distinct aroma, the scent is processed through the brain’s olfactory system, the sensory system responsible for our sense of smell. The olfactory system is connected to the limbic system, an area of the brain where memories and emotions are stored. The limbic system produces a distinct response to the aroma based on memories that are associated with a particular smell, creating the rush of feelings that follows.
Why is this important to creativity? Creativity is often based on emotions. When emotions are clear and balanced and positive, creativity typically flows. When emotions are wound up tight in anger or frustration, a creative outlet can help release those feelings so we can move through life in a more positive light.
Scents are all around us; food cooking in our homes, flowers and trees as we take a walk, manufacturing facilities we drive past and in the air at the ocean. Another simple option is to use essential oils, whether diffused in the air, topically on our skin or even consumed if a certified pure therapeutic grade, as a wonderful way to help open, release and balance emotions – and creativity. Uplifting scents such as mint have a high concentration of ketones, known to be energizing. Citrus oils typically possess significantly uplifting characteristics with chemical components like limonene, beta-pinene, and monoterpenes. Many spice essential oils are known for their warming properties, which come from phenols.
Essential oils in the floral category are typically composed of monoterpene alcohols, which hold calming properties. Tree, herb, and grass oils are known to promote grounding, soothing emotions and feelings of renewal, and they primarily include sesquiterpenes, esters, and oxides.
While not every user will have the same response, simply inhaling while peeling a tangerine or running your fingers across a sprig of rosemary can open up and enhance your creativity and simply make life more enjoyable. Take a stroll through the local Farmer’s Market and let your sense of smell lead you on a journey of scented creativity! Happy smelling!
