I’ve always been fascinated by the science of the moon cycles and the lore or truth of human’s strange behavior during the full moon. And in recent years have become a student of the cycles of the moon and how they affect us, symbolically if not literally. Simply playing attention to when it’s a full moon and when it’s a new moon (where you can see no moon at all) has provided a simple cycle to reflect little deeper into myself and life.
Friday, June 9 brings what is known as the Apogee or Micromoon, a full moon that is appears slightly smaller and less bright than usual. It’s at the point of the moon’s orbit that is farthest away from the Earth. In comparison Supermoons are when the moon’s orbit is closest to the Earth. Due to gravitational pull this affects high and low tides as well. Supermoons bring extra high King Tides and Micromoons lead to a smaller variation by about 2” of regular spring tides.
Folklore, astrological research, police and emergency department activity, and my own personal observation show that the full moon can result in unexplainable increases in emotional energy, which can ultimately result in heightened thought activity, especially in the creative thought process. During the period of the waning moon, it’s believed many people find a subconscious urge to reflect inward, to think about experiences or a better understanding of their own emotions. This can result in more reflective artwork and creative projects or bring projects to completion.
With each new moon I like to think about what I’d like to bring into my life and set that intention, whether it’s starting a creative project or something else I desire for my life. The full moon is all about release, what isn’t working in life right now, or what is it time to let go of.
This reoccurring cycle helps me live and create with more intention. And when we’re paying attention things always turn out better than when we’re just letting life go by without noticing.
Sound intriguing? Join me on June 9th to paint, take a short hike under the full moon to the local labyrinth in the hills and symbolically release what’s time to let go of. No experience needed and we’ll have fun while we’re at it!
