Crash kills woman on Benicia Bridge

August 6, 2017 by George Johnston Leave a Comment

Commuters on the Interstate 680 northbound bridge might have wondered why traffic had stopped and if they would make to their destination on time. This delay was caused by a fatal crash that took the life of a Travis Air Force Base airwoman Friday morning.
According to Contra Costa County California Highway Patrol’s Facebook page, the 22-year-old woman from Concord was traveling northbound on the Benicia Martinez Bridge. She merged to the far right lane of the bridge and drove up to the slower semi truck. The woman’s Honda hit the semi-truck, then began veering to the left and across all lanes of traffic. Witnesses say the car collided into the left side concrete wall. The woman died before being transported to a hospital. The driver of the semi-truck, a 49-year-old from Modesto, was uninjured. The identities of both drivers had not been disclosed by press time.
Contra Costa California Highway Patrol officials were advised of the accident around 6:05 a.m. Police shut down I-680 northbound to Interstate 780 westbound until 8:30 a.m. Upon its initial investigation, the CHP determined the woman was not wearing her seat belt but that alcohol and drugs did not appear to play a part in the collision. At press time, the investigation was ongoing.
