City seeking applicants for open positions on commissions, boards

January 2, 2018 by Nick Sestanovich 1 Comment

For those looking to become more involved in their community and possibly make a difference in the new year, the city is seeking applicants for a variety of open positions on commissions and boards. The positions are available to any Benicia resident who fills out a form and drops them off in the city clerk’s office.

The current open positions include two full terms on the Benicia Public Library’s Board of Trustees; one full term on the Building Board of Appeals;five full terms and two unexpired terms on the Civil Service Commission; a full term on the Community Sustainability Commission; a full term on the Economic Development Board; a full term on the Historic Preservation Review Commission; three full terms on the Open Government Commission; a full term on the Parks, Recreation & Cemetery Commission; a full term on the Traffic, Pedestrian & Bike Safety Committee; a full term for the Sky Valley Open Space Committee and three full terms for the Soltrans Public Advisory Committee. Interested applicants may apply for as many positions as they desire, but they can only serve in one.

Applications can be filled out on the city of Benicia website at ci.benicia.ca.us by hovering over the “Government” tab and clicking on “Government Openings.” They can also be acquired by emailing Deputy City Clerk Kate Gibbs at kgibbs@ci.benicia.ca.us, calling 746-4200 or in person at the city clerk’s office at City Hall, located at 250 East L St. The entire documents must be completed and submitted to the city clerk’s office with the applicant’s original signature. The deadline to submit is Monday, Jan. 8, after which applicants may be interviewed by a councilmember subcommittee, then by Mayor Elizabeth Patterson before the applicant is voted to be appointed at a City Council meeting. For more information, go to ci.benicia.ca.us or call 746-4200.

With all these openings it will be very interesting to see if any of the citizens of Benicia who are concerned about dogs in parks, retail cannabis, water and sewer rates, industrial safety ordinances, the color of lights on First Street, and the list goes on and on, are actually going to put their application in to serve on any of these boards and commissions.
