CA Democratic Party chair to speak at Benicia Labor Day breakfast

August 30, 2017 by Nick Sestanovich Leave a Comment

Labor Day is a day off for many, and each person will be celebrating in their own way. Some might throw barbecues. Others might take a drive to a new or favorite place. This coming Monday, the Napa-Solano Central Labor Council (NSCLC) will be celebrating in their own way: honoring the organized labor movement that led to the creation of this holiday with a breakfast and various speakers.

The NSCLC, a labor collective representing Napa and Solano counties, will be hosting its eighth annual Labor Day breakfast at Ironworkers Local Union 378. Attendees can enjoy such breakfast foods as eggs, bacon, fruit and pastries and beverages like coffee and orange juice and listen to various speeches highlighting labor unions.

The speakers are all representatives of the area, including Benicia legislators U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson, State Sen. Bill Dodd and Assemblymember Tim Grayson as well as other nearby officials such as U.S. Rep. John Garamendi (D-Fairfield) and Assemblymembers Cecilia Aguiar-Curry (D-Dixon) and Jim Frazier (D-Fairfield). The biggest speaker on the agenda is Eric C. Bauman, the chair of the California Democratic Party. Bauman was elected to the position in May after 8 years as vice chair and 17 years as the Los Angeles Democratic Party Chair.

In addition to the speakers, there will be a 50/50 raffle, face painting and family entertainment by Vacaville’s very own Kelly the Clown. The food will be prepared by operating engineers who volunteered to cook.

Daniel Espinoza, an NSCLC field organizer, said the event has gotten more popular over the years.

“Every year, it’s gotten bigger and better,” he said. “The attendance has definitely gone up, but we’re really embodying what it’s been since the beginning so we like to stay pretty much the same.”

Espinoza said the event remains a good opportunity for people to learn about collective organizing in the workforce.

“I hope people take away the power and unity, specifically in labor and union movements,” he said. “We want to make sure that everyone feels protected and knows that their voice is heard and that together we can do things.”

NSCLC’s Labor Day Breakfast will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday, Sept. 4 at Ironworkers Local 378 Hall, located at 3120 Bayshore Road. Tickets are $30 for adults, $5 for children ages 4 through 12, and free for children ages 3 and under as well as out of work union members. There are also sponsorship opportunities available.
