Benicia State Parks Association has wrapped up a busy May, with activities ranging from teaching children how butter is made to completing plumbing repairs at the Fischer-Hanlon House, President Carol Berman said.
The butter churning experienced, presented by BSPA volunteers as a “time travel” experience, first took place during the 12th annual California State Parks Advocacy Day, May 6 at the Sacramento State Capitol.
While BSPA members were in Sacramento, Vice President Bob Berman visited several legislative offices.
The damaged irrigation system at the Fischer-Hanlon House, part of the Benicia Capitol State Historic Park, not only was repaired but also upgraded, by contractor Mike White, Berman said.
The historic park is at 115 West G St.
White wrapped up a two-year project that was a joint effort by the BSPA and the California Department of Parks and Recreation (CDPR), which shared the $9,000 cost.
The state’s share came through the AB 1478 matching funds program, matched by in-kind services provided to the park by the city of Benicia, Berman said.
The association’s volunteers were feted to a luncheon May 17, attended by more than 40 of those volunteers, plus staff and board members, Berman said.
After a Mexican-themed meal, volunteers received tokens of appreciation from Berman and Volunteer Coordinator Dan Smith, she said.
More butter churning took place May 23, when volunteers went to Joe Henderson Elementary School as hosts of a project to teach 90 fifth graders how the table product is made.
The next day, horticulturalist Bert Johnson guided a tour of the Benicia State Recreation Area, especially Forrest Deaner Native Plant Botanical Garden that is on more than three acres of the state park on the city’s west side.
“Our volunteers and board members were kept quite busy this month, and continue to provide the necessary support to ensure that the public enjoys all of the wonderful activities
and programs offered by the two Benicia state parks,” Berman said.
