The St. Patrick-St. Vincent High boys varsity basketball team ended Friday night’s home game with a 12-0 run and stunned visiting St. Joe’s, 51-39.
Both teams battled back and forth all night and were tied 39-39 with just over three minutes remaining. Jack Gamba and Tavian Henderson each drove to the basket for scores to put the Bruins in front, and Gamba brought the house down with a 3-pointer from the right corner to make it 46-39 with 1:27 left.
St. Joe’s had only three team fouls and spent precious time trying to put the Bruins on the free throw line. Only 40 seconds remained on the clock by the time SPSV reached the bonus, and B.J. Standley calmly buried two free throws to bury the Pilots.
Henderson led all scorers with 18 points and Marcus Oducado added 14 points for the Bruins, who improved to 19-4 overall and 6-2 in the Tri-County Athletic League. Gamba finished with eight points and had a crucial steal and offensive rebound in the final minute. Standley and Romeo Mays each pulled seven rebounds.
The Bruins beat visiting Gateway a night earlier, scoring 30 points in the second quarter en route to a 63-49 victory. SPSV trailed 9-4 after one quarter until catching fire as Gamba scored 10 points in the second quarter while Henderson and Oducado combined for 11 more.
SPSV is solidly in second place behind El Cerrito (19-3, 8-0) in the TCAL heading into Tuesday’s game at Salesian.
