The St. Patrick-St. Vincent High varsity football team opened the season with an impressive 47-12 victory over Ygnacio Valley on Friday in Concord.
Quarterback Michael Pappas ran for three scores and threw for another while teammates Jamonte Barrett and Marshel Martin each ran for long touchdowns as the Bruins won their season opener for the first time since 2011.
Pappas actually got off to a rocky start when his first pass of the night was intercepted by the Warriors (0-1). But the senior quickly settled down, connecting with Marquel Johnson for a 20-yard scoring strike and later running for three touchdowns, including two while avoiding Ygnacio Valley’s rush. Pappas combined for approximately 300 yards of total offense for SPSV.
Barrett added a 75-yard touchdown run and Martin added a 45-yard TD run. Marcus Gay put the icing on the cake when he recovered a fumble and raced 40 yards for a touchdown. Kailon Johnson-Loud had a solid day running the ball for the Bruins, who led 33-12 at halftime.
SPSV (1-0), which won only two games all of last season, takes on Vallejo at Corbus Field this Friday. The Bruins beat Vallejo, 34-21, last season at Dante Magnani Field.
