Bruins look to keep it going against crosstown rivals

September 1, 2016 by Steve Guertin Leave a Comment

The St. Patrick-St. Vincent High varsity football team looks to continue its strong start to the season when the Bruins take on the crosstown rival Vallejo Redhawks on Friday night at Corbus Field.

The Bruins (1-0) rolled to an impressive 47-12 victory over host Ygnacio Valley last week in Concord. Quarterback Michael Pappas ran for 73 yards and three touchdowns and threw for another 90 yards and a TD. Teammates Jamonte Barrett and Marshel Martin each ran for long touchdowns as the Bruins won their season opener for the first time since 2011.

Akil Edwards had a solid all-around opener for the Bruins, completing 3-of-3 passes for 16 yards and adding 75 rushing yards on only three carries. Barrett ran for 70 yards, including a 25-yard touchdown, and Martin had a 45-yard touchdown run. Marcus Gay recovered a fumble and ran it back 40 yards for a touchdown.

Vallejo (1-0) is also on a high after dumping Armijo in its season opener, 33-11. The Redhawks took a 20-3 lead at halftime and never looked back. Byron Thomas had a rushing touchdown for Vallejo as did Bruce Burns and Isaiah Kelly. Quarterback Akairyn Dumas did a good job running the ball and passing the ball.

SPSV won only two games all of last season and can match that total with a win over Vallejo. The Bruins beat Vallejo, 34-21, last season at Dante Magnani Field.
