The St. Patrick-St. Vincent High varsity football team followed up its impressive season-opening win with a convincing 46-0 victory over crosstown rival Vallejo on Friday night at Corbus Field.
The Bruins (2-0) led only 9-0 before exploding for 30 unanswered points in the second quarter. It was SPSV’s first shutout victory since the Bruins blanked Burton, 28-0, last September. SPSV has already matched its win total from all of last season.
SPSV defensive back Akil Edwards set the tone early when he tackled Vallejo’s Byron Thomas in the end zone for a safety late in the first quarter. The Bruins got the ball back and needed only 21 seconds to score again as quarterback Michael Pappas connected with Marquel Johnson for a 49-yard touchdown pass and a 9-0 lead.
The second quarter was all Bruins. Johnson scored again when he hauled in a 15-yard TD pass from Pappas, who completed 6-of-14 passes for 119 yards on the night with no interceptions. Tyler Chesney recovered a Vallejo fumble and rambled 26 yards for a touchdown to make it 23-0. A bad Vallejo snap sailed out of the end zone for SPSV’s second safety of the half, and Pappas ran for a 1-yard TD to make it 32-0. A 12-yard TD run by Kailon Johnson-Loud with 1:44 left in the half gave SPSV a commanding 39-0 lead at the break.
Edwards, who took over for Pappas at quarterback for the entire second half, completed the scoring with an 8-yard TD run early in the third quaarter. Edwards led the Bruins with 43 rushing yards on seven carries. Johnson ended up with three catches for 80 yards and two TDs and also had an interception.
Vallejo managed only two passing yards and had only 65 yards of total offense.
SPSV, which has outscored its two opponents 93-12 this season, plays at Burton this Saturday afternoon.
