Some citizens may continue serving their community on various boards and commissions, others will be seeking seats for the first time. All will be voted on by the Benicia City Council at its Tuesday meeting.
After a lengthy process that included interviews by a council subcommittee and Mayor Elizabeth Patterson, the council will be voting to appoint or reappoint members to the city’s various boards and commissions. Eight candidates will go before the council. These include:
* The reappointment of Carole Nail to the Board of Library Trustees for a full term ending Jan. 31, 2021.
* The reappointment of Ruth Workman to the Board of Library Trustees for a full term ending Jan. 31, 2021.
* The appointment of Joseph J. Miesch, a merger and acquisition adviser and current member of the Board of Directors for Benicia Chamber of Commerce, to the Finance Committee to fill a term ending July 31, 2019.
* The appointment of Romancing the Home owner Debbie Machado to the Economic Development Board for a full term ending July 31, 2022.
* The reappointment of Dennis Cullen to the Economic Development Board for a full term ending Jan. 31, 2022.
* The reappointment of Jon Van Landschoot to the Historic Preservation Review Commission for a full term ending Jan. 31, 2022.
Additionally, there are two applicants to the Planning Commission to fill a seat declared vacant following the death of Commissioner Dan Masdeo. Patterson is recommending the appointment of Terry Mollica, an attorney specializing in real estate, land use, commercial leasing and other transactions.
“I have a long-established expertise in land use planning, real estate development and have appeared before planning commissions both as an applicant and representative,” Mollica wrote in his application. “I understand land use and can be an asset to the Commission.”
The other applicant is Donald Stock, the executive project director for construction business C. Overaa & Co. in Richmond.
“I have attended several meetings over my 29 years as a resident of Benicia,” Stock wrote in his application. “Positive planning provides an engine for the growth of our city and maintaining quality of life. Smart utilization can be used as a tool for these goals.”
The appointed commissioner’s term will run through Jan. 31, 2021.
In other business, the council will approve a lease agreement between the city and Benicia Main Street for the Southern Pacific Railroad Depot and vote to institute a program waiving outstanding fines for overdue library materials for youth after turning 12 and again when they turn 18.
The council will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18 in the Council Chambers at City Hall, located at 250 East L St. A live stream of the council meeting can also be found online at ci.benicia.ca.us/agendas.
Bob "The Owl" Livesay says
Now is the time for the city council to step up. Appoint Mr. Stock to the planning Commission. Not Mr. Mollica. He was the pro bono attorney for Mayor Patterson’ group of “Shadow Government” trying to hi-jack the City Council on the ISO issue. You know that group I call the “Patterson Twelve” that were losers on the ISO.Yes they did lose but Mayor Patterson is using another approach. Get her pro bono attorney on the Planning Commission and then a possible run for City Council in 2020. An attempt by Mayor Patterson to control the city council in the 2020 election. VOTE FOR MR. STOCK CITY COUNCIL members.
