BHS tennis team still unbeaten in SCAC play

MELANIE FISHER was a 6-1, 6-0 winner in No. 2 singles for Benicia High’s girls tennis team Thursday against Bethel.

Benicia High’s girls tennis team improved to 3-0 in the Solano County Athletic Conference after a 7-2 victory over host Bethel on Thursday.

Lily Hayward remained unbeaten this season after a 6-1, 6-1 victory in No. 1 singles for the Lady Panthers (3-0 SCAC). Benicia’s top five singles players have yet to lose a match.

Melanie Fisher cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory in No. 2 singles. Madeline Beyer was a 6-0, 6-1 winner in No. 3 singles, and Madison Lammert won her No. 4 singles match, 6-0, 6-1. Kaitlyn Tang accounted for Benicia’s other singles victory, winning 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5.

Katie Voss and Mariah McNally fought their way to a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) victory in No. 1 doubles. Sam Pacheco and Frankie Soto paired up for a 7-5, 6-3 win in No. 3 doubles.

Bethel (1-2 SCAC) won one singles match and one doubles match. Aleean Flowers was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over LaPaula Parker, a junior varsity player who is improving with every match. Jaymie Bernardo and Priscilla Ferreira held off Benicia’s Kati Steineman and Viva Traver in No. 2 doubles, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).

“The first through fifth singles took command and won their matches soundly,” said Benicia head coach Lisa Burton. “Both Frankie and Sam played consistently and smart, using offensive lobs and volleys.”
