Benicia High’s girls tennis team took early control of the Solano County Athletic Conference with a convincing 8-1 victory over host Vanden last Thursday.

The Lady Panthers (1-0 SCAC) won the first five singles matches and all three doubles matches. Lily Hayward was a 6-3, 6-0 winner in No. 1 singles while Melanie Fisher won 6-1, 6-3 in No. 2 singles. Madeline Beyer won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3, Madison Lammert won 6-1, 7-5 at No. 4, and Kaitlyn Tang was a 6-4, 6-1 winner at No. 5 singles.

Katie Voss and Mariah McNally teamed up for a 6-0, 6-4 victory in No. 1 doubles. Katie Steineman and Neha Yadav were 6-1, 6-2 winners in No. 2 doubles. Sam Pacheco and Viva Traver won their No. 3 doubles match, 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 10-7.

“We started our season off with a bang,” said Benicia head coach Lisa Burton. “Sam and Viva proved they wanted the win more by winning that 10-point tiebreaker in the third set.”

The Lady Panthers played without singles player Emily Jewik, who sat out with a foot injury. LaPaula Parker stepped in at No. 6 singles and lost 6-1, 6-1 in her varsity debut.

Benicia plays at American Canyon on Tuesday.
