Benicia High’s girls tennis team opened the 2015 season with a 9-0 sweep of visiting Vanden last Thursday.
Lily Hayward beat three-time Solano County Athletic Conference champion Kiwi McDaniel in No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-2. Hayward lost in three sets to McDaniel in last year’s SCAC finals.
Other singles winners for Benicia included Madeline Beyer (6-3, 6-2), Gabriella Traver (6-2, 6-4), Samantha Beyer (6-0, 6-3), Nicole Go (6-0, 6-0) and Katie Voss (6-3, 6-1).
Emily Jewik and Madison Lammert teamed up for a 6-2, 6-1 victory in No. 1 doubles. Mimi Esmerode and Angela Jennings were 6-4, 6-0 winners in No. 2 doubles, while Kati Steineman and Mariah McNally completed the sweep with a 5-7, 6-0 (10-5) win in No. 3 doubles.
“We talked about starting off this season with purpose and a strategy for winning, and that is exactly what the girls executed on the courts,” said Benicia head coach Lisa Burton. “I was so thrilled with everyone’s play.”
Benicia (1-0) hosts American Canyon on Tuesday.
