Benicia High’s boys golf team shot a blistering 403 and won the Bulldog Tournament title at the Tracy Country Club on Monday.
It was the first invitational tournament victory in a decade for the Panthers, who shot a 403 the week before at the Transbay Tournament but finished fourth out of 26 teams. This time around, Benicia’s 403 was good for the top spot out of 15 teams and five strokes ahead of second-place Liberty of Brentwood.
“The kids were excited to win a tournament championship,” said Benicia golf coach Mike Prolo. “They have a lot to be proud of.”
Dustin Sparks shot a career-best 73 and finished tied for first place with two other golfers. Teammate Evan Cuenco shot a 78, Zack McClure added an 81, Nick Flores chipped in with an 84, and Connor Hatfield rounded out Benicia’s scorecard with an 87.
