It wasn’t a particularly good effort by Benicia’s usual lofty standards, but the Lady Panthers girls golf team managed to knock off host Bethel on Tuesday, 315-362, in the Solano County Athletic Conference opener for both teams on the Blue Rock Springs East Course.
The Lady Panthers are more accustomed to shooting 215 than 315, but several of Benicia’s top players weren’t available Tuesday and several newcomers are still getting their feet wet.
“It’s been a long time since we’ve shot in the 300s, but we’re missing our two through seven players from last year so I think that explains it,” said Benicia head coach Nan Prolo. “But we had some very promising play from our new golfers.”
Sophomore Sofia Young, the reigning SCAC Most Valuable Player, was medalist for the day with a 38. Freshman Lacey Tsutsui came in with a 61 in her varsity debut, and veteran Jordan Whiting fired a 68. Gabi Komoda and Sydney Jones each shot a 74 to round out Benicia’s scorecard.
Benicia, which has won the SCAC team championship 14 of the past 16 years, will try to lower its score today when it hosts Vanden at Mare Island.
“The kids are excited to come to practice and work on some of the problems we saw today,” Prolo said.
