Benicia High’s boys golf team shot a 403 and finished a very respectable fourth out of 26 teams at the prestigious Transbay Tournament at Rossmoor Golf Course on Monday.
It was Benicia’s best finish in years at the 18-hole Transbay Tournament, which this year featured 130 golfers from some of the best high school golf programs in the area. The Panthers finished one stroke behind third-place Monte Vista (402). Miramonte won the tournament with a 389 while San Ramon Valley finished second at 395.
“We’re a little disappointed that we finished one stroke away from taking third place, but we’re very happy with how we played,” said Benicia golf coach Mike Prolo. “Fourth place out of 26 really good golf programs was a great day for us.”
Zack McClure chipped in for birdie on two holes and led the Panthers with a 78. Evan Cuenco also had two birdies and finished right behind McClure with a 79, while teammate Connor Hatfield also added a 79. Nick Flores birdied one hole but settled for an 80 after having five putts lip out during his round. Dustin Sparks also had two birdies and rounded out Benicia’s scorecard with an 87.
“It was windy out there and the greens were really inconsistent,” Prolo noted. “It was tough conditions for everybody. But this finish for us was really encouraging. If we can continue to improve, I think we’ll do well in the Section Division II Tournament.”
A golfer from Irvington won the individual tournament title with a four-under 68.
Benicia coach Nan Prolo won low net in the Coaches Tournament, shooting a 98 with a 31 handicap for a 67 net. Prolo chipped in from 30 yards out for birdie on a par 5.
“I think she needs to start being a little more honest about her handicap,” Mike Prolo joked.
The Panthers return to Solano County Athletic Conference action Wednesday against Vanden at the Green Tree Golf Course.
