Benicia High’s boys golf team had its season come to an end at Monday’s Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Tournament, held at the Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton.
The Panthers collectively shot a 424 and finished 11th out of 15 schools. Benicia, which finished 10th out of 14 schools last season, was coming off its first-ever SJS Division II championship.
“We did all right,” said Benicia golf coach Mike Prolo.
Senior Zack McClure led the Panthers with a 74 and tied for 15th overall, missing a berth in the Northern California Tournament by only three strokes. Senior teammate Evan Cuenco was right behind with a 76, while fellow senior Nick Flores added an 82.
“The three kids who have been on the varsity since they were freshmen – Evan, Zack and Nick – really got some good experience and got better and better every year,” Prolo said.
Dustin Sparks shot a 94 and Dylan Fergerstrom rounded out Benicia’s scorecard with a 98. Tyler Caruso’s 103 didn’t count toward Benicia’s final score.
David Laskin of Jesuit shot a 66 to win the individual tournament title. Andrew Amheiter of Davis shot a 69 and was the only other player to break 70.
Davis won the team tournament with a 361, followed by Lodi (371) and Jesuit (372). Those three teams, along with Tai Mamea of Christian Brothers, Chris Ebster of Gregori, Chandler Kallas of Vista del Lago, and Jarrett Hill of Vacaville advanced to the NorCal Tournament, which begins May 23 at Corral de Tierra Country Club in Salinas.
