Benicia High’s girls tennis team improved to 2-0 in the Solano County Athletic Conference after an 8-1 victory over visiting American Canyon on Tuesday.

The Lady Panthers swept all six singles matches and their only setback of the afternoon came in a third-set tiebreaker.

Benicia junior Lily Hayward won her No. 1 singles match, 6-0, 6-3, while Madeline Beyer won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Samantha Beyer and Katie Voss were also 6-1, 6-0 winners in No. 4 and 6 singles, respectively. Gabriella Traver was a 6-0, 6-1 winner in No. 3 singles, and Nicole Go won her No. 5 singles match, 6-1, 6-3.

Milagros Esmerode and Madison Lamert battled to a 6-1, 7-5 victory in No. 1 doubles, while fellow Lady Panthers Kaitlyn Tang and Mariah McNally cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 victory in No. 3 doubles. Kati Steineman and Angela Jennings won the first set in their No. 2 doubles match but ultimately fell 5-7, 6-2, 10-6.

“We played a solid match in the scorching heat,” said Benicia head coach Lisa Burton. “Both Lily and Nicole were down 0-3 in the second set but rallied back to close out with impressive turnarounds.”

Benicia plays at Bethel on Thursday.
