Benicia High’s boys golf team moved into sole possession of first place in the Solano County Athletic Conference after a 205-253 victory over host American Canyon at the Chardonnay Golf Course on Tuesday.
Both teams came into the match undefeated, but it was the Panthers who came out unscathed. The top five Panthers each outscored American Canyon’s best golfer as Benicia improved to 4-0 on the season.
Even though the final score didn’t look close, both teams were happy after a round of speedy, competitive golf.
“It was windy out there and conditions were not easy, but everyone was having fun playing golf and not having to wait for slow players,” said Benicia golf coach Nan Prolo. “We were done in just under three hours, which is great. It was so enjoyable.”
Benicia’s Nick Flores was medalist for the day after shooting a 39. Teammate Zack McClure was right behind with a 40, and Evan Cuenco came in with a 41. All three Panthers had a birdie during their round. Connor Hatfield added a 42 and Riley McCracken rounded out Benicia’s scorecard with a 43. Dustin Sparks had a birdie during his round, but his 44 was thrown out.
Nick Cillo got a chance to go one-on-one in an exhibition match and won 53-58.
