Benicia High’s varsity baseball team completed a season sweep of Vallejo with a 12-1 five-inning victory over the visiting Redhawks on Friday.
It was the third straight win for the Panthers, who improved to 13-9 overall and 6-5 in the Solano County Athletic Conference. Benicia sits half a game behind Bethel for the final Sac-Joaquin Section playoff spot with four games remaining.
Taylor Greene pitched four innings and allowed only one hit with nine strikeouts and two walks to earn his third win of the season. Jonathan Holmes allowed one unearned run in an inning of relief.
The Panthers batted around in a six-run first inning. Jason Toumbs singled home two runs and Isiah Saguar added an RBI double to make it 3-0. Saguar later scored on a wild pitch, Xian Covington-Hunt scored on a ground out and David King scored on an outfield error to make it 6-0.
Benicia put the game away with six more runs in the third inning. Caleb Van Blake’s double scored Riley Pitkin and Frank Tom. Michael Cosmides added an RBI single that scored Jack Bowles, and singles by Armani Dickerson and Maurice Calhoun kept the rally going.
Benicia takes on Fairfield twice this week beginning with a home game on Wednesday.
The Panthers will hold their annual Alumni Game this Saturday at Fitzgerald Field, with the junior varsity game starting at 3 p.m. and the varsity game beginning at 7 p.m. Alumni interested in playing should contact Benicia manager Jim Bowles at 753-1208.
