Benicia High’s badminton team qualified two singles players and two doubles teams for the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs after top-four finishes at the Solano County Athletic Conference Championships last Friday at American Canyon High School.

Benicia’s duo of Anataya Phadungsang and Anise Ghandchi went 5-2 in the doubles tournament, losing to a Vallejo team in the finals for a second-place finish. The Burdick twins – Jeanette and Simone – went 3-2 and finished third, becoming the first Benicia players to qualify for Sections more than once.

Gabby Traver finished went 4-2 in the singles tournament and finished third. Fellow Lady Panther Jade Fisher also went 4-2 and took fourth.

The Lady Panthers accounted for half the Section spots allotted to the SCAC and it’s first time Benicia has had more than one entry.

“It justifies the record we had in league and it was a very good day,” said Benicia badminton coach Tom Stephens.

The SJS playoffs begin this Friday at Bear Creek High School in Stockton.
