Benicia High sophomore golfer Sofia Young is going to Augusta National Golf Club in April after winning the Regional Finals at last weekend’s Drive, Chip and Putt Championships at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash. – site of this year’s U.S. Open.
Young, 15, who finished eighth at last year’s Regional Finals, showed the virtues of consistency by winning the driving (58 points) and chipping (45) phases and earning fourth in putting (36) on the way to claiming the girls 14-15 division title.
Young said she “wasn’t too proud of my putting today,” but she made up ground with her driver.
“I’ve gained a lot of distance since last year,” she said, citing her work with coach Tom Rezendes of NorCal Golf Academy.
Young won the Solano County Athletic Conference’s Most Valuable Player award as a freshman last season and has been medalist in every Benicia match so far this season.
