Junior Sofia Young shot an 83 at the 18-hole Sac-Joaquin Section Division II Girls Golf Tournament, held Monday at Eagles Vines Golf Club, and was the only member of Benicia High’s team to advance to next week’s Masters Tournament.
It’s the second straight year Young will be the lone Lady Panther representative at the Masters Tournament. Benicia finished fourth as a team Monday with a 531, and only the top two teams advanced. Young’s 83 was the fourth-best individual score overall and she was the second of three golfers who qualified for Masters as an individual.
It’s the third straight Masters appearance for Young, who finished tied for 15th out of 108 golfers as a sophomore at the 2015 Masters. Young led the Lady Panthers with an 83 in the 2014 Masters but needed to shoot a 72 to advance to NorCals. Young is attempting to become the first Lady Panther to each the NorCal Tournament.
Benicia freshman Angel Antonio nearly qualified for Masters with an 87 on Monday but missed advancing by one stroke. Both Young and Antonio each received medals for finishing in the top eight overall.
Roseville won the team tournament with a 480 and advanced along with Whitney, which finished second with a 482. Ponderosa was third with a 528, and McClatchy took fifth with a 593.
Whitney’s Emily Dixon was the top individual Monday after shooting a 77. Kayla Kwong of Roseville was right behind with a 78, and Kayla Diaz of McClatchy was third with an 80. Antelope’s Katie Harris shot an 86 and joined Diaz and Young as individual qualifiers.
Freshman Alexis Valentine had Benicia’s third-best score with a 116. Jordan Whitney-Morales added a 121 and Lacey Tsutsui rounded out Benicia’s scorecard with a 124. Megan Saari had her 125 thrown out.
“We knew we were going to be facing a lot better competition than we saw during the regular season,” said Benicia head coach Allan Frederick. “There were no misconceptions about how hard it was going to be. We had two freshmen and a sophomore playing and this was a good experience for them.”
It’s the second straight year the Lady Panthers failed to reach Masters as a team. The Lady Panthers have won seven straight Solano County Athletic Conference championships.
The Masters will tee off next Monday – Halloween – at The Reserve at Spanos Park.
