Gabriella Traver made Benicia High badminton history on Friday when the senior won the singles championship at the Solano County Athletic Conference Tournament.
Traver, who went 5-0 during the tournament, became the first Lady Panther to win a SCAC championship in the eight-year history of Benicia High’s badminton program.
“It’s pretty cool,” said Benicia badminton coach Tom Stephens. “She was pretty excited.”
Traver won four of her five matches in straight sets. Her only three-set victory came against teammate Danielle Lozada, who went 5-2 during the tournament and finished in third place.
The Lady Panthers also earned a medal in doubles when Jordan Whiting and Elena Brown took third place. The Vallejo tandem of Charize Malana and Jenny Wilson won the doubles title.
Traver, Lozada, Whiting and Brown will continue their season this coming Friday in the Sac-Joaquin Section Tournament at Bear Creek High School in Lodi.
