BENICIA’S JUNIOR LEAGUE all-stars captured the District 53 championship Wednesday night with a series sweep of American Canyon.
Benicia’s 13-14 all-stars breezed to the District 53 championship with a 13-3 victory over American Canyon on Wednesday at Fitzgerald Field.
The win gave Benicia a clean sweep of the best-of-3 series and sends the team to the Section 1 playoffs on Sunday morning in Dixon. Benicia (2-0) outscored American Canyon 24-3 in two games and allowed only four hits – all coming on Wednesday after Sean Mcquilken’s no-hitter Monday.
“We’re meshing well together, our batting order is working really well and we’re hitting and playing good defense,” said Benicia manager Carl Rendell.
Starting pitcher Justice Alexander allowed only four hits and two runs over 4 2/3 innings Wednesday. Dawson Hunt came on in relief to pitch 2 1/3 innings and allowed one hit and one unearned run.
Benicia’s offense pounded out 13 hits, with Alexander supporting himself by providing three hits and three RBIs. Darin “Chuchi” Cooper had four hits and two RBIs while Dawson Hunt had three hits, including two doubles. Benicia stole eight bases on the night and was an out away from winning by shutout in the fifth inning due to the 10-run mercy rule.
“I thought the team continued to demonstrate their ability and patience at the plate by choosing good pitches to hit,” Rendell said. “The proof of their patience is that 10 of our 13 runs were RBIs. Justice pitched very well to keep the score down and Dawson was great in relief as well.”
