Benicia’s 10/11 all-stars rally to avoid elimination

Benicia Little League’s 10/11 all-stars were full of comebacks Wednesday night in a 23-18 victory over St. Helena at the District 53 Tournament in Fairfield.

Benicia trailed 11-3 after three innings but sent 18 batters to the plate in the top of the fourth and scored 14 times to take a 17-11 lead. St. Helena scored three times in the bottom of the fourth and four times in the fifth to take an 18-17 lead, only to have Benicia come back again in the sixth, scoring six times to avoid elimination.

“They just never give up and that’s huge,” Benicia manager Josh Gibbons said of his team. “It was a slugfest. Everybody was hitting and everyone contributed.”

Kevwe Ojo hit a grand slam and Diego Menjivar added a three-run homer for Benicia (3-1), which handed St. Helena (2-2) both of its losses during the tournament. T.J. Peters had two triples, Vaughn Goshert had a double and Gage Gibbons had a single and a RBI.

Benicia takes on Sonoma in an elimination game on Thursday, with the winner advancing to Saturday’s championship round against unbeaten Napa National.
