Benicia seeks to fill variety of vacancies

January 20, 2015 by Donna Beth Weilenman Leave a Comment

The city of Benicia wants you to apply to serve on an advisory panel.

Multiple vacancies exist on the city’s boards, committees and commissions, said Assistant City Manager Anne Cardwell, and the municipality is “encouraging residents to apply for the several openings.”

Cardwell said applicants are being sought for the Arts and Culture Commission, which creates and promotes art and cultural programs and activities; the Civil Service Commission, responsible for hearing and making final determinations on personnel-related appeals and certifying its findings and recommendations; and the Community Sustainability Commission, which educates, advocates and provides oversight for integrated solutions that seek a sustainable equilibrium for economic, ecological and social health and well-being.

Openings also exist on the Finance Committee, an advisory committee to the City Council on financial matters and work programs that provides input on financial policy and processes; the Human Services Board, which distributes requests for funding to nonprofit agencies that provide services to Benicians in need of help; and the Library Board of Trustees, which makes and enforces rules, regulations and bylaws necessary for the administration, government and protection of the public library.

In addition, the city has vacancies on the Parks, Recreation and Cemetery Commission, which works closely with the director of Parks and Community Services and with other departments on behalf of parks, cemeteries and recreational activities; the Planning Commission, which enforces duties, rights and powers imposed by California law and the City Council concerning planning matters; and the SolTrans Public Advisory Commission, which reviews and provides comments to the SolTrans Board on service and fare adjustments, development of short-range transit plans and Soltrans’ annual work plan.

“Any resident interested in serving on any city commission or board is encouraged to fill out an application for the board or commission of interest,” Cardwell said.

Applications can be picked up between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the City Clerk’s Office located at City Hall, 250 East L St.

They also are available on the city’s website, www.ci.benicia.ca.us.

“You may also request an application form be sent to you by calling the City Clerk’s Office at 707-746-4200 or sending a request to kgibbs@ci.benicia.ca.us,” Cardwell said.

Applications are due in City Hall by 5 p.m. on Jan. 30.

Those with questions may contact Cardwell at 707-746-4200 or acardwell@ci.benicia.ca.us.
