Benicia resident Brandon Andrew May achieved the respectful rank of Eagle Scout recently with Troop 7007, Benicia’s oldest Boy Scout Troop. The troop was established over a century ago, pre-1917.
Brandon’s Eagle Project, a community improvement project that is required to achieve the prestigious honor, is called “Six Flags.”
Brandon constructed and built permanent housing for all six ranks of the military to proudly display their flags alongside the US Flag and POW Flag at the Benicia Veterans Memorial Hall. The Vet’s Hall will now be able to display the flags of the US Marines, Air Force, Merchant Marines, Navy, Coast Guard and the Army whenever the other two flags are flown. The next date this will be visible is the Fourth of July. The flags are always flown on Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day and Veterans Day at the Vet’s Hall.
“His project proudly pays tribute to all our military,” said Brandon’s mother, Linda May.
May has received many accolades for his work, and was commended by local, state and federal representatives for his achievements. Dignitaries that attended his Court of Honor include District 2 Solano County Supervisor Monica Brown, Benicia Mayor Elizabeth Patterson, Vice Mayor Christina Strawbridge and representatives from Congressman Mike Thompson office, State Senator Bill Dodd’s office, and Assemblyman Tim Grayson’s office. Brandon was presented with several certificates of recognition and letters of accomplishment from local, state and federal officials.
Brandon has elected to continue with scouting and has joined as a leader within Troop 7, following in his father’s footsteps, Scott, who has been the scoutmaster for the past six years.
“I am aspiring to grow within the leadership ranks of Scouting /Troop 7 and want to support the troop’s younger Scouts on the path of becoming an Eagle,” said May. “I plan on assisting my community, by following and emulating the Scout Law, pursuing my ambitions and completing my education to fulfill the profession I am choosing, and where I can be of the most help.”
Boy Scouts of America is one of the nation’s largest, most prominent value-based youth development organizations.
