THE BENICIA NATIONALS swept a doubleheader from the top-seeded Benicia Royals to win the Junior League TOC Championship.

Needing to beat the top-seeded Benicia Royals twice in a row last Saturday, the Benicia Nationals did just that in resounding fashion to capture the Junior Division District 53 Tournament of Champions at Fitzgerald Field.

The Nationals, who went 11-10 during the regular season and already carried a TOC loss into the finals, beat the Royals in the first game, 8-2, behind a complete-game performance by pitcher Danny Koenen. Aaron Jenkins had three hits for the Nationals while teammate Charlie Rose added two hits. Koenen helped his own cause with a double and a single.

Dawson Hunt had a single and scored a run for the Royals in the Game 1 loss.

Jenkins handcuffed the Royals in Game 2, pitching 6 1/3 innings in an 8-1 victory that gave the Nationals the championship. Rose went 2-for-4 and pitched the final 2/3 innings. Ethan Bello had a double, a single and a walk, and Jenkins helped his own cause by going 2-for-4. The entire Nationals lineup contributed to an 11 hit performance.

Benicia’s Junior League all-stars host American Canyon on Monday in the first game of a best-of-3 series in the District 53 Tournament at Fitzgerald Field.
