Benicia High’s boys golf team had three players break 40 on Tuesday at Mare Island, giving the Panthers a blistering 193-300 victory over visiting Vanden.
The 193 was easily the best round of the season for the Panthers and only five shots off the school record (188) set in 2003.
“It was cold and windy out there but the kids were playing with a vengeance,” said Benicia golf coach Mike Prolo.
Nick Flores was medalist for the day after shooting an even-par 35. Flores had two birdies and had a chance to break par but three-putted the final hole.
Teammate Evan Cuenco shot a 37 and also had a birdie. Dustin Sparks shot a 39, Connor Hatfield added a 40 despite a double-bogey on the final hole, and Zack McClure and Riley McCracken each fired a 42. No one shot par on the final hole.
“They’re finally starting to realize that they’re pretty darned-good players and have the potential to do some special things,” Prolo said. “They’re cheering each other on and really looking to pick everybody up.”
Benicia hosts Fairfield on Thursday.
