Benicia High soccer coach Javier Martinez wasn’t a happy man after his Lady Panthers put on a lackluster performance Monday night in a 3-0 loss at Rodriguez.
The Lady Panthers had a few good scoring opportunities in the first half but went into the break down 2-0. Rodriguez (3-2-1) added a third goal in the second half while Benicia’s offense sputtered down the stretch.
“We just didn’t play well,” Martinez said. “We’re playing like a team I don’t know. And Rodriguez is good. They beat Napa and tied Vintage, and those are two pretty good teams. So Rodriguez is a team to be reckoned with in the MEL.”
Benicia (2-3) lost one of its best players when senior Tatiana Soglin went down with an ankle injury in the first half. Soglin didn’t play again the rest of the night but hopes to return for the Christian Brothers Tournament beginning Friday.
Jordyn Cunningham scored twice for Rodriguez, with teammate Natalie Neal accounting for the other goal.
Martinez is still tinkering with the starting lineup trying to find some chemistry, but it’s his team’s attitude early in the season that has him most concerned.
“We need to show more of a commitment,” Martinez said. “There’s a lot of jabbering going on and there’s not a lot of concentration on the game. We need to put more work in if we want to get better.”
The Lady Panthers open the two-day Christian Brothers tournament with a game Friday morning against Bradshaw Christian.
