Benicia High’s badminton team closed out its best regular season ever with a 9-6 loss to visiting Bethel on Tuesday.
It was Senior Day for the Lady Panthers, who finished 7-5 and in third place in the Solano County Athletic Conference. It was the first time Benicia had finished with a winning SCAC record in the six-year history of the program.
The Lady Panthers managed only two singles victories against Bethel. Rachel Cardoza rallied back for a 17-21, 21-18, 21-8 win in No. 7 singles, and Ramona Glatzel won 22-20, 21-11 in No. 8 singles.
Benicia won the doubles fight. Anise Ghandchi and Anataya Phadungsaeng were 24-22, 21-9 winners at No. 4 doubles while Glatzel and Madison Schmeling won their No. 5 doubles match, 21-9, 19-21, 21-11. Giuditta Traver and Hannah Mauch won 21-16, 19-21, 21-16 in their last match ever, and Elena Brown and Lauren Wendell were 21-19, 22-20 winners at No. 7 doubles.
Benicia will host the SCAC Championships, which take place all day Friday. Representing Benicia in singles will be Julieanne Chaves, Jade Fisher and Gabriella Traver. Doubles pairs include the Burdick twins, Ghandchi and Phadungsaeng, and Glatzel and Schmeling.
