Attic fire damages West J St. home

May 16, 2014 by Donna Beth Weilenman Leave a Comment

A fire near an attic ventilation fan damaged a home at 384 West J St. Wednesday night, Benicia Fire Chief Jim Lydon said. No one was injured.

Lydon said the first call came about 8:04 p.m. and arriving firefighters saw flames coming through the roof. But they didn’t see any signs of fire inside the home as they checked to see if it was occupied, he said.

Crews attacked the flames on the roof, then removed damaged materials to make sure there were no remaining hot spots, he said. “The fire appeared to have originated in the area of an attic ventilation fan (and) burned a small area of roofing material around the fan unit.”

Benicia firefighters were helped by Benicia police, and Vallejo Fire Department provided station coverage while the local department fought the fire.

“The property was left in the care of the property owner upon departure of the crews,” Lydon said.
