Benicia High’s badminton team turned in another impressive performance on Tuesday, dominating visiting Vacaville for a 14-1 victory.
It was the second straight dominating win for the unbeaten Lady Panthers (2-0), who have won 29-of-30 matches early in the season.
“I was a little surprised,” Benicia head coach Tom Stephens said of his team’s performance. “I thought Vacaville would give us a bigger challenge.”
Anataya Phadungsang came back from an early deficit to win her No. 1 singles match, 14-21, 21-12, 21-15. Gabby Traver was a 21-15, 21-3 winner at No. 2 singles while Simone Burdick won 21-18, 21-5 at No. 3 singles. Other singles winners for Benicia included Jeanette Burdick at No. 4 (21-12, 22-20), Maddy Schmelling at No. 5 (17-21, 21-10, 21-14), Danielle Lozada at No. 6 (21-18, 21-12), Anise Ghandchi at No. 7 (21-8, 21-9) and Elisabeth Miller-Binkley at No. 8 (21-11, 21-12).
The Burdick twins were 21-19, 21-10 winners at No. 1 doubles. Ghandchi and Phadungsang won 21-15, 21-11 at No. 2 doubles, and Lozada and Regina Salvador teamed up for a 21-18, 20-22, 21-16 win at No. 3 doubles. Elena Brown made her season debut and teamed with Jordan Whiting for a 22-20, 12-21, 21-9 victory in No. 5 doubles. Traver and Schmelling won their No. 4 doubles match, 21-12, 21-12, and Miller-Binkley and Alvina Phouasalit were 21-11, 21-19 winners at No. 6.
Benicia plays at Fairfield on Thursday.
