Benicia High’s girls golf team capped off its 14th league championship in the past 16 years by winning the Solano County Athletic Conference Tournament on Tuesday at The Vintner’s Golf Club in Yountville.
Benicia shot a 221 as a team, easily out-shooting Vanden (258) and American Canyon (268) for the tournament title. The Lady Panthers, who haven’t lost a SCAC match since 2009, automatically qualify for the upcoming Sac-Joaquin Section Division II Tournament.
The only drama Tuesday was provided by Benicia freshman Sofia Young and junior Jennifer Eleccion, who were neck-and-neck all day. Young birdied two holes and finished with a 2-over par 36, one better than her teammate, who took second with a 37. Young earned the SCAC’S Most Valuable Player award with the win while Eleccion earned All-SCAC honors.
Benicia senior Rachel Mahrt fired a 48 and joined Young and Eleccion as All-SCAC winners. Nicole Ramirez and Catherine Mahrt rounded out Benicia’s scorecard, each shooting a 50.
Jazmine Norman played as an individual and had a great day, coming in with a 46. Samantha Ross also played as an individual and carded a 52, and teammate Kelsey Cassick shot a 54.
American Canyon’s Erika Hallmark shot a 43 and took third place. Hallmark, teammate Ryane Ford, and Vanden’s Sydney Dante-Canoy and Ariel Ho were each won All-SCAC awards. American Canyon’s Jessica Poehleman and Vanden’s Cassie Alden will join Hallmark, Ford, Dante-Canoy and Ho as individual entries in the Division II Tournament, which tees off Monday, Oct. 27 at Rocklin Golf Club.
