Benicia resident David Cook is presenting a five-week video workshop beginning Jan. 9 on “Grooming the Next Generation for Success,” using the teachings of self-help author Dani Johnson.
“She’s really changed my life,” Cook said.
For Cook, it’s the first time presenting the “grooming” workshop, but last year he presented workshops on reducing personal debt using Johnson’s teachings.
“I’ve done two ‘War on Debt’ classes,” he said. “A lot of our problems are based on overspending.”
The “grooming” workshop, based on Johnson’s “First Steps to Success” program (danijohnson.com), aims to teach kids about goals, self-image, work ethic, how to avoid the “poverty mindset,” people skills and accountability.
It also “teaches them some stuff about money and nutrition, and so on,” Cook said.
“Everywhere you go, nobody likes to look at their own kids as being little tyrants, but you go out to the store, and they’re sassing their parents, and the parents just don’t know what to do!” he said. “It seems to be a generational thing. It’s not necessarily the parents’ fault — it’s the parents’ parents’ parents’ fault.
“I think a lot of the big problem out there is people just don’t know of a solution. Their hands are tied. This is a solution.”
The workshop will include videos by Johnson, author of such titles as “Grooming the Next Generation for Success: Proven Strategies for Raising the Next Generation of Leaders.”
“I’ve been to several workshops of hers. They have done tremendous things for my life,” Cook said. “My kids and grandkids, and my business, and everything. This is something we need to get out there, and share it.”
Cook said in England, some schools are implementing Johnson’s teachings — something U.S. schools should consider.
People who have benefited from Johnson’s seminars are doing their part to spread the word, Cook said. “People like us, knowing a good thing, having the gift shared with us, we want to share it with others,” he said.
“Because there’s a need. A big need out there.”
The video class is broken into five weeks, beginning Jan. 9 and ending Feb. 6. All workshops will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Gateway Church, 1315 Military West. They are free, but there is an optional workbook available for $10. It is not required for the class.
