Vallejo Veterans Memorial Building will get some needed repairs next week when volunteers with Rebuilding Together Solano County show up to finish work started earlier this year, said Elizabeth Hoffman, executive director of the nonprofit.
The continuation of the work on the veterans building has been made possible through a $22,000 grant from the Home Depot Foundation, Hoffman said.
“Rebuilding Together Solano County deserves enormous credit for the work it is doing, and we are glad to be part of their efforts,” said Kelly Caffarelli, president of the Home Depot Foundation.
Joining some of the Home Depot executives who will attend the workdays Nov. 7-9 will be Vallejo Mayor Osby Davis, Benicia Mayor Elizabeth Patterson and Solano County District 2 Supervisor and Board Chairperson Linda Seifert.
In addition, about 100 Team Depot volunteers will participate in the work, providing their expertise and time on the project, Hoffman said.
Partnering in the workday is Recology Vallejo, which is providing dumping bins for the project.
Other supporters are Behr Paints, Costco, Medic Ambulance, Panama Red Coffee and Walgreens, she said.
Volunteers will paint the building’s interior, exterior and its picnic tables, haul away debris, work on the grounds’ irrigation and landscaping, replace some doors and locks and install new flooring in the hallway and entrance.
The building, 420 Admiral Callaghan Lane, Vallejo, houses eight veterans groups, Hoffman said.
Using the meeting hall are the American Legion Vallejo Post 104, American Legion Mare Island Navy Yard Post 550, American Legion Manuel L. Quezon Post 603, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 21, Filipino-American Retired United States Armed Forces Association, Fleet Reserve Association Branch 8, United States Submarine Veterans Mare Island Base, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Carl H. Kreh Post 1123.
Caffarelli said those involved in the Home Depot Foundation are looking forward to participating in the work, and that her organization supports projects that make sure veterans have “a safe and accessible place to enjoy in their communities.”
Hoffman said preparatory work will be addressed during the first of the three workdays, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 7. Much of the work will be done during the same hours Nov. 8, and the project will wrap up during those same hours Nov. 9.
Donations are being accepted by Rebuilding Together Solano County, a nonprofit organization, and can be sent to Post office Box 5996, Vallejo, Calif., 94591.
The organization also is accepting services, such as plumbing, electrical work and carpentry, as well as home rehabilitation supplies, such as paint brushes and buckets.
