Walls of reality are collapsing at the Benicia Public Library. Well, not really, but the new virtual reality programs at the Benicia Library are blurring those lines.
The Library began its virtual reality program through Califa Library Group, a nonprofit library membership consortium. Califa began sending California libraries emails asking libraries if their institutions would be interested in starting a virtual reality program at their individual branches. This mass inquiry came after Califa received funding from state grants and donations of VR sets from virtual reality manufacturers. Benicia Public Library staff said yes to the email, and Califa sent the library an Oculus Rift.
Aug. 27 was the first VR event at the Benicia Library. In October, the library received an HTC Vive virtual reality set. Library staff beta tested the VR sets and games before a public rollout of the program. By December, the public was allowed to test out the HTC Vive set.
“I think it’s a great program and I think we have benefited from it,” Allison Angell, the head of Youth Service at the Benicia Library, said. “I feel lucky that we have it.”
More than 20 games are available for the Oculus Rift, according to Angell. There are games for more experienced VR gamers, and programs specifically designed for helping new VR users adjust to virtual reality. The HTC Vive program includes “ theBlu,” a game which allows users to explore the ocean. “Space Pirate Trainer” and “Paint” are popular games for the HTC Vive.
Angell said the VR program has regulars who will help new VR users understand the technology.
Helping the public understand technology is part of the job for the Benicia Public Library, which has created opportunities for helping patrons understand new or old technology. Angel described times when patrons have come into the library asking for help with a piece of technology they have either received or just purchased. She calls the library the “testing ground for technology.”
Angell said the library has many future plans for the VR program. There are talks between the Benicia Unified School District and the library about introducing VR to Benicia High School, and a beginning virtual reality class is in the works at the library as well.
The next VR event at the Benicia Public Library is from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10. Minors over the age of 13 must have a guardian or parent sign a waiver before playing with the VR sets. School IDs are also required for those under 15. The Library is located at 150 East L St. Additional VR events are slated for March 17, April 7, April 28 and May 19.
