Amy and Scott Yacullo moved to Benicia from New Jersey three months ago to raise their four children. They also saw an economic opportunity to support the city of Vallejo. They did so by purchasing the Grocery Outlet on Admiral Callaghan Lane.
“There’s great deals and values to be had, and we wanted to be able to continue to save people money,” Amy said.
The discount supermarket chain has had a presence in Vallejo for a long time. After many years at the corner of Tennessee and Tuolumne streets, the store moved into the site of a former Yardbirds Home Center in 2008 in the midst of the Great Recession. In 2015, a second Grocery Outlet was opened in downtown Vallejo, this time at the corner of Marin and Main streets.
After the departure of the Admiral Callaghan location’s owners, the Yacullos seized the opportunity to take it over. They will be celebrating with a grand reopening Saturday featuring all kinds of activities. These include free samples, music, a “spin the wheel of bargains,” a dollar hot dog and drink sale for Vallejo food bank Faith Food Fridays, a chance to meet Lois Prices and Ben Saven— aka the “Frugal Friends” puppets from Grocery Outlet’s advertising– and prizes with giveaways, such as $500 in gift cards. Additionally, the first 100 customers starting at 7 a.m. will receive a free eco bag.
Amy Yacullo says the store will continue to sell healthier food options, including a variety of organic and specialty items. Additionally, they will also be selling new wines.
“We will have all sorts of new deals,” she said.
The grand reopening will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 3 at the store’s 66 Admiral Callaghan Lane location. For more information, email vallejo@groceryoutlet.com.
