Park said Zachery Kroll, 19, was arrested shortly after midnight, culminating a day-long search after the shooting of a Jesse Bethel High School senior near the school. Kenneth Maxwell “Max” Rusk’s identity was confirmed by his relatives in an interview with local media.
Park said Vallejo police were called about 11:55 a.m. Thursday by someone who said a person might have been shot in the skate park, near the school in the 1800 block of Ascot Parkway.
He said officers found an unresponsive Rusk, and emergency medical crews were dispatched but the boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police asked administrators at two Vallejo schools, Joseph Wardlaw Elementary, 1698 Oakwood Ave., and Jesse Bethel High, 1800 Ascot Parkway, to lock down their campuses. Vallejo K-9 officers and the California Highway Patrol air unit searched throughout the neighborhood for suspects, but none was found, Park said.
The schools’ lockdown was lifted at 12:36 p.m. Thursday.
“Vallejo police detectives worked through the evening tracking down and verifying any all leads connected to this homicide,” Park said in a news statement Friday.
He said at 12:10 a.m., Kroll was stopped “incident to a traffic stop on the east side of Vallejo,” arrested and charged in Rusk’s murder.
“This tragic event does not appear to be a random act of violence and it appears that the victim and Mr. Kroll (knew) each other,” Park said.
