Benicians have the chance to put their trivia skills to the test next Saturday at the Clocktower as the Benicia Public Library is hosting its annual Trivia Bee.
The Trivia Bee has been a part of the library for 26 years, dating back to the institution’s previous location at East G Street. It is a trivia contest in which all proceeds from the event go to the library. The Trivia Bee began in 1992 and was modeled in a similar style to the TV game show “Jeopardy.”
“Author, Author” is the theme of the Trivia Bee this year. Attendees are encouraged to dress up as authors or characters from books. There will be a costume contest, and the winner will receive a plaque for a year to show off.
This year, the Trivia Bee will be different. There will be a table of eight so everyone has a chance to play. Reservations for a table of eight cost $400. Trivia teams usually consist of members of local businesses and community groups who all compete for the honor of being Benicia’s “Top Trivia Toad,” according to Administrative Secretary Helaine Bowles.
There are six rounds of trivia questions, which fall into multiple categories including entertainment and culture, sports, history and geography, cooking, literature, science and technology. There is also a miscellaneous category.
Winners of the coveted Trivia Toad hold onto the prize for a year. When the next Trivia Bee takes place, the previous year’s winner passes the Toad onto the winner of that year’s contest.
“It’s a lot of fun and we’re expecting a lot of people,” Bowles said.
The Library is expecting at least 200 people at the Trivia Bee, Bowles said.
The Trivia Bee will take place beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24 at the Clocktower, located at 1189 Washington St. Individual tickets are $30. Only 250 tickets will be available for purchase, and no tickets will be sold at the door.
