The Best Income Tax Story (March 4, 1943)
The way one man solved his income tax problem makes the best story on the unpleasant subject of taxes this office has heard— and its author, A.C. Woodress.
It seems that a deck hand on the Martinez-Benicia ferry, was listening in on a conversation between two business men, one of whom stated he would pay his taxes by the quarter. The decision of the business man solved a vexing problem to the deck hand who announced that he would just send a quarter for his tax.

School Keeps Bulletins On Winter Games (Feb. 29, 1968)
During the period of Feb. 66-18 (Editor’s note: This is what was written in the original article) students at Benicia Intermediate School followed the Tenth Winter Olympics on their own school bulletin board.
Giacomo Brusetto, the Spanish teacher, who developed and maintained the idea, said the pupils displayed a keen interest in the daily events and changes in standings. In what began as only a short notice on the board soon became a dynamic, ever-changing bulletin board.
Changing the titles of the events, their results, the names of the winning athletes and the cumulative day-by-day medals standing by countries kept the students well-informed and created new interest as the games progressed.
Terms such as Nordic and Alpine events, figure skating, biathlon or cross-country relay ceased to be unknown quantities and became alive and familiar like the names of Peggy Fleming, Eugenio Monti or Jean-Claude Killy.

CEC gives ground on city’s demands (Feb. 28, 1993)
The California Energy Commission says it will “leave the door open” to a monitoring station in Benicia that the city insists be included in building the proposed cogeneration plant at the C&H Sugar refinery.
The City Council will continue its review Tuesday of the proposed 240-megawatt cogeneration facility that would be built across the Carquinez Strait in Crockett.
City Attorney Shawn Mason will report to the council on the California Energy Commission’s preliminary, but strong, recommendation of approval contained in the Presiding Members’ Report.
Councilmen have indicated they will issue a letter of protest against the plant if Energy National Inc., the Portland, Ore., applicant, does not agree to a number of conditions, including installing a monitoring station in Benicia.
The council is also concerned about air pollution “offsets” being implemented in San Jose or Richmond, but not in this area, which is likely to experience any negative air impacts from the plant.
The full articles of these and other stories are available on microfilm at the Benicia Public Library.
