Counties get serious on rail project (April 11, 1993)
By David Hagerty
Officials from three counties, including Solano, are aiming to decide by September whether they are ready to commit to a plan that could start up passenger rail service between Benicia and Oakland within a year.
Officials from Alameda, Contra Costa and Solano counties Thursday signed an agreement to review a proposal by Southern Pacific that would allow the government to start up public train service along tracks owned by the railroad freight company.
“GEBROC is finally legal after much struggling to get everybody’s O.K. on it,” Jerry Hayes, a Benicia city councilman and one of three representatives on the board, said.
GEBROC is short for Greater East Bay Rail Opportunities Coalition, a lengthy title for a group with heavy responsibility.
The coalition will review what many consider the best proposal around for quickly improving public transportation in the Bay Area.
The full articles of these and other stories are available on microfilm at the Benicia Public Library.
