Staff Report
U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson (D-Napa) issued a statement Friday following the killing of three psychiatric workers at the Veterans Home of California in Yountville. The facility is located in Thompson’s district, which also includes Benicia.
“Tonight as a community, we mourn the tragic shooting at the Yountville Veterans Home and the devastating loss for the families, loved ones, and friends of those killed,” Thompson said. “Law enforcement from our district and around our region responded with truly commendable professionalism and we thank them for their selfless service.”
At 10:30 a.m. Friday, Afghanistan War veteran Albert Wong arrived at the facility and had a shootout with a Napa County sheriff’s deputy. He then entered a room hosting a farewell party for employees and started taking people captive. After 6 p.m., California Highway patrol officers came into the room and found Wong and three other people who were shot to death. Those killed were clinical psychologist Jennifer Gonzales, clinical director Jennifer Golick, and Christine Loeber, the executive director of nonprofit The Pathway Home, aimed at helping veterans adjust back into civilian life. Wong had been part of the program until he was dismissed earlier in the week. The motive for Wong’s attack is still under investigation.
“The Veterans Home is a place where veterans receive the help they have earned through their service,” Thompson said. “Pathway is a program that gives veterans a guide to improve their lives. Those killed were three wonderful and dedicated women who got up every morning to better the lives of veterans. Tonight all our hearts are heavy.”
Donations for the families of the three women killed can be sent to the 3 Brave Women Fund, c/o Mentis, 709 Franklin St., Napa, CA 94559.
