The four components of the Liberty High School renovation that were tabled by the Benicia Unified School District Board of Trustees on Sept. 20 for a lack of competing bids will be back before the board this week so trustees may formally reject them.
The items — toilet room alterations, re-roofing, window replacement and landscaping at 350 East K St., which is also the district office — did not receive the expected number or quality of bids, “mainly due to limited advertising,” Supervisor of Maintenance Roy Owens wrote in a report to the board.
Two of the projects, the toilet room alterations and window replacement, had limited bid submissions. The roof replacement had seven contractors at the pre-bid walk-through, Owens wrote, but the subsequent three bids “were over the project budget, and all should be rejected.”
Only three contractors attended the landscaping walk-through and the only bid was over-budget, he wrote.
“It is expected that a better bid response will be obtained for the above-listed four construction projects through a re-bid process that includes an extensive advertising and job posting effort, as well as some modifications to each project,” he wrote.
In other business, Dr. Karen Dubrule, director of curriculum and instruction, will ask the board to approve the use of a districtwide note-taking system, the Cornell Method, for grades four through 12.
The system will “increase student learning as well as to better prepare our students for college and career readiness,” she wrote in a report to the board.
