Benicia is among California’s 50 safest cities, a survey by ValuePenguin of Federal Bureau of Investigation crime reports has determined.
The results were sent to the Benicia Office of Economic Development, which released the information this week. Topping the list is Hillsborough, a city of 11,245 that is 15 miles south of San Francisco. Hillsborough, which had no reported violent crimes and only 57 property crimes listed in FBI statistics for 2013, had a crime score of just 103.
There is no private enterprise in the city, and its population is about 15 years older than the state average.
Hillsborough has an estimated average household income of $200,000, and the average home in Hillsborough is valued at $956,138. Both figures are much higher than the state’s average, the surveyors said.
Runner-up is Imperial in Southern California, with a population of 15,943 and a score of 196, the only other California city with a sub-200 mark.
Clayton, Rancho Santa Margarita and Laguna Woods rounded out the top five.
“When deciding where to live, safety is a top priority,” ValuePenguin staff said in a prepared statement. The organization said it prepared the survey based on the most recent statistics from the FBI in determining the safety of cities in California.
Benicia came in 46th, with a crime score of 526. It was ranked just behind Winters, and also was beaten by such cities as Cupertino, Kensington, Hercules and Orinda.
Benicia came out ahead of Murrieta, Fillmore, Lafayette and Martinez.
The FBI said Benicia, a city of 27,558, had 109 violent crimes among 100,000 and 1,390 property crimes per 100,000.
ValuePenguin listed 417 municipalities in California, with crime scores ranging from Hillsborough’s low of 103 to Oakland’s high of 6,735. The cities’ average score was 1,290.
Dixon, which has a population of 18,743, averaged 187 violent crimes per 100,000 people and 2,193 propery crimes per 100,000 for a score of 828.
Fairfield, with 108,425 in population, averaged 459 violent and 3,250 property crimes per 100,000 for a score of 1,860.
Rio Vista, which has just 7,622 people, had 420 violent and 3,214 property crimes per 100,000 and scored 1,358.
Suisun City, with a population of 28,805, averaged 222 violent and 2,187 property crimes per 100,000 and scored 933.
Vacaville, a city of 94,347, averaged 213 violent crimes and 2,222 property crimes per 100,000, and was given a score of 1,030.
Benicia’s South Solano County neighbor, Vallejo, has a population of 118,336 and averaged 861 violent and 4,846 property crimes per 100,000, scoring 3,195.
Of the Bay Area’s larger cities, the survey said San Francisco, with a population of 833,863, had 847 violent crimes and 5,795 property crimes per 100,000, and was scored 3,972.
Oakland, with a population of 403,887, had 1,977 violent and 6,233 property crimes for a state-worst score of 6,735.
To the south, San Jose, population 992,143, recorded 324 violent crimes and 2,571 property crimes per 100,000, for a score of 1,645.
The state capital, Sacramento, with a population of 478,182, had 656 violent crimes and 3,760 property crimes per §00,000, and a score of 2,744.
