The Benicia Stingrays turned in a strong performance in their regular-season finale last Saturday, but visiting Martinez was a tad stronger.
Martinez used team depth and plenty of speed to beat the Stingrays, 404.5-313.5, at the James Lemos Swim Center. Martinez’s boys outscored Benicia 207-147 while the girls topped Benicia, 197.5-165.5.
Benicia finished 2-3 in the Twin Counties Swim League. The League Meet is scheduled for Aug. 2 at American Canyon High School.
Camron Jacobson and Kelsi Norman each turned in gold medal performances against Martinez. Jacobson won the 9-10 boys 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 41.15. Norman was first in the 15-18 girls 100-yard breaststroke (1:17.14).
Benicia’s 13-14 girls 200-yard freestyle relay team of Lauren Matthews, Samantha Degavre, Tara Othman and Julia Lindemuth took first place with a gold medal time of 1:58.06.
Andrew Maichel took first place in the 13-14 boys 50-yard freestyle with a silver medal time of 28.76. Jake Rafac was right behind at 28.88 and won the 50-yard butterfly with a silver medal time of 33.00. Rafac, Maichel, Craig Guila and Jacob Hoenig took first place in the 13-14 boys 200-yard freestyle relay (2:03.58).
Nate Freeman won two events for Benicia’s 11-12 boys, taking first in the 50-yard butterfly (honor time 33.23) and the 100-yard IM (silver time 1:21.12). Elian Salindong set an honor time by winning the 50-yard breaststroke in 39.44, and Robert Patocchi also set an honor time by winning the 50-yard backstroke in 35.13. Patocchi, Salindong, Freeman and Joey Birdseye won the 200-yard medley (2:19.82).
Camron Jacobson was a dual individual winner for Benicia’s 9-10 boys, taking first in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard IM with silver times of 33.53 and 1:31.26, respectively. Jacobson also joined Pierce Tenret, Teague Cotsifas and Daniel Goncharov in winning the 200-yard freestyle relay (2:45.18).
Aden Li won the 25-yard butterfly (bronze 24.19) and 100-yard IM (2:00.30) for Benicia’s 7-8 boys. Mario Stump was first in the 25-yard backstroke (silver 22.90) and Bryce Mincy was second in the 25-yard butterfly (bronze, 26.35). Stump, Mincy, Li and Daniel Korneev won the 100-yard freestyle relay (1:25.92). Stump, Mincy, Li and Carlos Largaespada won the 100-yard medley relay (1:41.42)
In the boys 6-under division, Vincent Perelli won the 25-yard backstroke (bronze 32.44) and Michael Becker won the -yard breaststroke (44.83).
Kelsi Norman swam to girls 15-18 honor times in winning the 100-yard freestyle (1:01.61) and backstroke (1:13.82). Lauren Matthews set a 13-14 honor time in winning the 50-yard freestyle, and Julia Lindemuth won the breaststroke with a silver time of 38.15.
Amber Iniguez and Chloe Cotsifas shined for Benicia’s 11-12 girls. Iniguez set honor times in winning the 50-yard backstroke (35.20) and freestyle (29.59). She also took second and set an honor time in the 100-yard IM (1:20.21). Cotsifas won the 50-yard breaststroke with an honor time of 38.69 and also won the 100-yard IM with an honor time of 1:17.16. Jessica Scott set honor times while finishing second in the 50-yard backstroke (36.63) and freestyle (29.61). Scott, Cotsifas, Iniguez and Skyelar Clouse won the 200-yard medley relay (2:19.43).
Emma Silberman won the 9-10 girls 50-yard breaststroke with an honor time of 47.19 and teamed with Grace Carrell, Emily Davis and Meadow Iniguez to win the 200-yard medley relay (2:55.36).
