This wasn’t how the St. Patrick-St. Vincent High girls varsity volleyball team wanted to kick off the Tri-County Athletic League season.
Facing defending TCAL-champion Albany on the road in Tuesday night’s league opener for both teams, the Lady Bruins lost their focus in a 25-13, 25-17, 25-19 sweep by the Lady Cougars. Albany (4-5, 1-0 TCAL) had 32 kills, nine aces and seven blocks while recording the sweep.
“We had a lot of miscommunication,” said SPSV senior Candice Turk. “I thought we could have played a lot better than we did.”
The Lady Bruins (7-5, 0-1 TCAL) had a hard time stopping Albany junior Gretta Kirby, who had 16 kills and 18 digs for the Lady Cougars. Teammate Jerri Bonnel added seven kills and Samaya Hornsby had six kills.
“They were setting up their outside hitter a lot and she was burning us on her angles,” Turk said.
Freshman Caroline Gallagher led the Lady Bruins with nine kills, six digs and three aces. Turk had six kills while sophomore Kamryn Mitchell had 10 assists, five digs and three aces.
SPSV hosts El Cerrito on Thursday night.
“We need to work more on our serve receive and our blocking, and we need to bring our energy up more when we play them again,” Turk said.
